Dog Training Pigeons

I am trying to locate a place where I can purchase pigeons for gun dog training. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know where you are located, but some larger cities have racing pidgeon clubs. As soon as they have a faster pidgeon they remove the slower ones from the group so they don't breed. These pidgeons are then destroyed or given to people who want to start their own line or to people training dogs. Another option may be to do a google search. I've heard of places that you can buy them and have them shipped, but don't know anything about it. Good luck.

If you're going to mail order them, you might as well mail order pheasant, quail, or ducks, then.

For training I use pheasants from a breeder that lives an hour from me. I can get the birds for about $5 to $6 each. I want to use pigeons for steadying because they sit better than pheasants do when dizzied. A suggestion for those of you in a rural setting, each spring here in central Illinois they have "community auctions" and there are always small farm animals up for auction. Besides turkeys and chickens there are also rabbits, guiney fowl, chuckar, pheasants and pigeons. Prior to next spring I'm going to build a pigeon coop and buy as many pigeons as I can at auction next spring.
